On the North Rim
The forest permeates everything. Oaks, dogwoods, lodgepole pines all fight for space to grow, and suddenly it all stops. Here, the forest runs out of space as the land drops sheer thirty yards or so to the valley floor. A curious mist obscures a good deal of the view below, but the hushed and garbled rush of water on stone betrays a waterfall, perhaps on the other side of the crevice some forty yards across. Despite an obscured view into the valley, the view from the northern rim is still inspiring.

The barely-negotiable trail leads down into the mist-covered crevice; around you, the forest stretches.

Obvious exits:
Forest Down the Trail

The sun has come up and burned the fog away, leaving the day cooler but warm enough that jackets aren't necessary. Taking advantage of the more mild weather, Jacey has set out on a hike. She negotiates her way upward, from the Caern and around the northern lip of the canyon. In spite of the largeness of the moon, she seems in a fairly good mood, humming quietly and peering down into the swirling mist as she goes.

Falcon's Gambit trots in from the northern forest, ears pricked and attentive to her surroundings. On spotting the young Fianna she chuffs to get the girl's attention, then returns to homid to wave. "Jacey! Just who I was looking for. How are you doing?"

Jacey looks up at the chuff and grins. "H'lo, Shelby. I'm good today, just thinking about things." She takes a step or two away from the edge of the rim, hands clasping behind her head. "How are you? Good hunting today?"

"I don't hunt on the bawn, unless it's for a cub," she answers simply, though not without a quick flash of smile. Coming up beside the Fianna, she glances incuriously down into the Caern before returning her attention to Jacey. "I had some questions about Rollo, actually. You're his primary teacher, aren't you?"

Mention of the cub kills some of the Fianna's good mood, the grin falls and her brow creases. "Between me and Cole-rhya, yeah. I guess so. The Righ isn't the easiest Garou to catch when you need him. I'm going to talk to the spirits about that tree he tore up."

"I don't know that I've ever seen him, except perhaps at Moot," Shelby agrees with another quick smile. "I told August-rhya about the tree too. I haven't seen that Gaian who's claimed Groundskeeper, but she should know." A beat and she adds, "I wanted to ask you, though, what he's been taught so far. He says it's just the Litany." The Fang pauses again with an expectant look.

"Yeah, and how to shift." Jacey rubs a hand across her face, looking not too pleased. "We touched on Auspices and rank, too. Everything I was taught before being let loose on the Bawn. I'm afraid to ask, has he done anything else?"

"But not Tribes?" the Fang queries. "Not the Sept positions, the Caern, the Triat?"

Jacey shakes her head. "Not yet. Hell, I didn't know about the Sept positions or the Caern until ..well it was the day Jacinta-rhya came and banned cubs from Edgewood because of that big attack, and the Triat roughly the same time. Tribes, that's my fault, I overlooked it."

Shelby hmms and looks thoughtful. "I don't want to tell you how to teach your cub, but those are pretty important things to know, Jacey. I knew them before my Change, of course, but Rollo hasn't that advantage." A moment more and she shakes her head, a smile reappearing. "You also might want to get him some clothing. It's far too cold to be wandering around without anything on, and there are just some concepts you can't get across in lupus."

Shelby adds, "Unless he's done something, and no clothes is a punishment?"

Jacey smirks slightly, then shakes her head. "No, not a punishment. I don't know the Rite yet, but I guess I should get on to remedying both problems. And you're right, they are pretty important. And it's not best to follow how you were taught, but I don't know another way."

Shelby says, "I can do it; I just don't have any clothes for him. I haven't wanted to buy any, because it's the Tribe's responsibility to provide for their cubs, and I didn't want to step on your toes."

"If he's not happy with hand-me-downs from Edgewood he can find Cole and ask for something else." The Fianna scowls for a moment and shakes her head. "I have no money. And you're more than welcome to do the dedication thing on him if you know it and he's got clothes." Again, Jace rubs a hand across her face then looks at Shelby. "I'll find him tonight and sit down with him and spell everything out."

With one eyebrow cocked Shelby eyes the younger girl for a long moment before finally nodding. "I'm rather surprised Cole-rhya assigned you to be his primary teacher, actually. Did he tell you why he did?"

"Because we're the only two members of the tribe that're still around." Jacey looks up at Shelby, not trying to meet the other's eyes nor searching for sympathy. "Garret and Kaylee are gone. Freedom's... somewhere. I'm the only one who's Rited and I'm only following what Cole-rhya told me to do. If it were up to me, I'd find him a Theurge who's not afraid to knock sense into him and someone more experienced with teaching cubs that I could shadow."

"Why don't you ask him if you can?" the Ragabash asks sympathetically. "Zosia had me stay in the house for a couple of weeks, with Al but her pack was always available to teach. And then, of course, she asked Tim if he'd help. If Zosia doesn't have the time to teach him, I'm sure she'd be able to suggest someone."

The Galliard gives the suggestion some thought and finally nods. "I'll go over things again, while I wait to hear from Cole-rhya. Guess I could always ask Kaz for help, too, if the Righ won't budge."

Shelby purses her lips at that. "Leapfrogging your Elder because he doesn't give you what you want isn't a smart thing to do, Jacey."

Jacey shakes her head. "I said for help, not for doing it for me. I wouldn't ask her to do that."

Shelby says, "You said 'if the Righ won't budge'. If Cole wants you to train him, then he wants you to train him. Not ask the Sept Elder for help."

"That's not what I meant," Jacey replies shortly. "I'll train him, if that's what the Righ wants. I'll teach him what I can. And if there's something I can't teach him or I'm not sure to teach him, and Cole isn't giving me answers, maybe Kaz will. I don't know. At least I'm trying."

Shelby folds her arms, expression turning cool. "And I meant it would be pretty dishonorable of you to ignore your Elder's wishes--that you teach him and no one else--and get other people to help you. Or are you going to argue that because you're trying, everything else should be excused?"

Jacey takes a breath then lets it out slowly. "I don't mean I'm going to ask them to help me teach. But there's no rule, or dishonor, for going and asking for help. If I don't know an answer to something and Cole isn't easily findable, it's not going against my elder's wishes to find that answer. Or to say 'I'm suppose to teach this thing, how do I do it?'."

"If he's said he doesn't mind if you ask for help outside the tribe, then of course not," Shelby agrees easily. "I don't know what goes on between you and him, remember? I've never met the man." "--It would be nice," she adds after a moment, "if Chandini would teach him to fight. I got a lot out of her classes. I think he'd do really well with her as a teacher."

"Unless he's changed the rules since I was a cub and Chandini's not teaching anymore then he probably will." Jace tucks her hands into her pockets and looks out across the canyon. "Thanks for pointing all this out to me, Shelby. I'll try to get things right and find out what Cole-rhya wants to do."

"You also might want to think about pulling him back to your Tribal lands, at least until he's got a handle on things," Shelby suggests, nodding acknowledgement. "It would also help if we--well, I--knew what I was and wasn't allowed to teach him about. But that will come after your talk with Cole," she says with an airy wave that's interrupted by a thought. "Oh - is he allowed to go to Edgewood? I asked him, but Rollo didn't know."

"As far as I know he is," Jacey replies. "But I think I'm going to change that, at least for a little while so I can make sure he understands things. Cole-rhya told me to teach him litany and let him loose."

"Then," the Fang clarifies, "may I take him to Edgewood for the purpose of getting him clothes? Where are they kept there, anyway?"

Jacey nods. "As long as he behaves himself and that's the only place he goes. Do you know where the Grotto is? North, clearing off the Scarred Forest that Tree-rhya patrols. Grotto's there. And clothes are kept upstairs at Edgewood in a closet. Just... use your nose." She grins slightly, shrugging.

A shake of her head shows that no, Shelby doesn't know where it is, but when directions are given she looks toward the north. "Mmm. I'll see if I can find it. Do you want me to escort him there, or something?"

"Yeah, that's tribe ground." Jacey's gaze turns northward as well, forehead furrowing. "You can find my scent coming out of there, but I'll.. he and I will meet you there, when you're available to take care of the clothing."

"I'm available almost any time," Shelby says with a shrug. "I'd actually advise getting him clothes before you take him away, though. Unless the Fianna lands include central heating...?"

Jacey shrugs as well. "I can teach him about tribes in wolf. It was winter after I first changed and I spent almost the entire time outside. But, sure, take him. I'll make sure there's food, too. And any other comforts from home he might want."

Shelby says lightly, "I doubt that," but doesn't press the issue. Instead she says, "I'll go look for him then, and let you pick him up at Edgewood later this afternoon. If we don't meet up by, oh, dinner time, then I'll take him up north and look for your place. Gaia watch, Jacey." She smoothly shifts into lupus and shakes out her coat.

"Stay safe, Shelby," Jacey replies. She watches the Ragabash for a moment, then turns to head back into the forests.
