By the Waterfall
The walls of the canyon surrounding the caern reach upwards to thirty feet here, their highest point. About two-thirds of the way up, a small underground spring exits the rock face. The water spills playfully down the cliff face, caressing the rocks and darting away, but always falling to gravity's inexorable pull. The flow, upon entering the shallow, chilled pool of water at the bottom, creates constant ripples in the puddle's surface. A light mist rises up from the ground near the pool, chilling to the bone.
The forest surrounding the caern's border is far less dense than the rest of the nearby forest, with ferns and clumps of aspen taking the place of white pine and birch. Scattered, centuries-old cedar stand majestically over their fallen, decaying, moss-covered comrades. This peculiarity seems to surround only the area just outside the caern.
To the west, cool mist kicked up by the falls mingles with warmer steam from geothermal sources; these mists swirl around the caern to the north. The caern's center lies northwest of here. You can pick out what seems to be a hazardous trail over rock and up the wall, to the side of the waterfall.
Obvious exits:
Steam Vents Center Windy Spot Up the Trail
Amidst the wind and the rain, there is a small dry spot near the one of the more sheer rock walls encircling the Caern, and this place is warmed by the adjacent steam vents. August rests, cross-legged, in said sheltered spot, his mostly-cotton garb well-soaked and steaming slightly from the nearby warmth. He's not doing much else besides watching the rain fall at the moment. His posture is straight and somehow formal - perhaps he just got done with a ritual, or perhaps he's about to start one.
At the top of the waterfall a white wolf pauses: it's the younger of the two Fangs, not his packmate. After a moment's observation of the Warder she picks her way carefully down to the caern floor, mindful of the wet, and from there she curves back and stops outside the boundary of his temporary territory. Blood-Guard-rhya.
August's posture becomes both more dominant, drawing himself up, and more casual, kicking one leg out and resting an elbow on his knee, as the white wolf approaches. "Evening, Shelby. What are you up to?"
Enjoying the weather, the wolf replies, with a twist of ears and flash of fang to prove the lie. She returns to her birth form, dressed for weather at least ten degrees colder than it is despite the rain, and wraps her arms across her middle. "Thought I'd stop by to pay my respects, but if I'm interrupting I can go."
August waves a hand dismissively. "No, actually I wanted to see you." His expression turns to a dark frown. "Have you heard anything about tunnels or formor dogs?"
Shelby blinks, then quickly drops her eyes before glancing back up. "No, nothing. I haven't seen anything like that either. On the bawn, I'm assuming? Who's seen them?"
August's frown grows deeper. "Jacey and Solsiva. It's two different problems, and the dogs are the only thing near the Bawn." He grunts disapprovingly, and it's clear there's some judgment unspoken. "From what I've heard, they could use some help scouting with the tunnels. And, to me, it sounds like the tunnels are a leech problem and the dogs might be coming from a powerful spirit."
"Doesn't Solsiva's pack have a Ragabash?" the unpacked one queries, lips pursing as she thinks. "I could ask her about it, but the only thing I know about vampires is that mention of them in the city, and I'm hardly ever there. It's good of you to think of me, though." A moment later she adds, "Where are the Wyrm-tainted dogs showing up? Which side of the bawn, I mean?"
August huffs and his face grows red. "The only people who've been scouting the tunnels have been Jacey and Solsiva, and they haven't been, from what Jacey's reported, been very stealthy. If they got a Ragabash already helping she ain't helped." In response to the question, he bites off the answer staccato: "One time, near Kent's Crossing. Another time, not on the Bawn, but close enough. By Wolf Woods."
While the Ahroun's face turns pretty colors Shelby finds interesting things to look at that are nowhere near it - oh look, rain, and hey, here's a waterfall. "South and west," she says, as if mentioning the time. "That's usually where I am, where I'm off the bawn, but no, I haven't seen anything. I'll be sure to keep an eye out, though."
"Look, you could at least talk to Jacey about the fucking tunnels and give her some damn pointers on how to scout," August says sharply. "I'm just pissed we got a leech problem and the only people on it can't even tell leeches when they see them." He raises an index finger. "I'll let Zosia know about the spirit aspect of the dogs, but if you could talk to her about it too." He jabs the air, in Shelby's direction. "I'm asking you because you aren't stupid and I don't expect you'll fuck it up."
"Besides the obvious...?" There was probably more, but Shelby manages to bite it off and turn her words into a tight smile for the Warder instead. "Yes, August-rhya. I'll see if I can find her or Solsiva, and see what they're doing. The only current thing I know about vampires," she says again, "is what I heard at Moot - Kaz-rhya said something about them in the city, and that we were to discuss it with that Walker kin. Ria, I think. If this is the same problem, I'll have to hunt her down as well."
That seems to satisfy the Warder, regardless of what the first statement was going to be. In a far more neutral tone, he supplies: "Rina. She's a little nuts but she's Kavi's mate, or something like that. I don't know her number, but I do know Kavi's. I'll text it to you when I'm off the Bawn." August shifts his weight and brings his leg in again. "I'm thinking we could get Tim in the loop about this too. And Kevin."
"Kavi," Shelby repeats thoughtfully. "He's that blue-haired Walker, isn't he? I've seen him at Moot a few times, but I don't think we've ever met." Still, she nods, then nods again when he mentions the ranking Ragabash. "Sure. I'd tag along with either of them, if they'd have me. What I know about scouting in the city would fill a very short book." Out of a back pocket she pulls a bit of paper, and a stubby pencil from another. "If you wanted to give me the number now...? Or is it only on your phone?"
"He's the Indian Walker," August corrects. Ruefully, he adds, "It's only on my phone. I'll text it to you later." Nevertheless, the Gaian is placated by Shelby's cooperation, and he begins to nod slowly. "Zosia's back now too, and since Silvertip is going to be helping with the zoo, she may be able to give the tunnel crap and the dog crap some of her attention also."
Only after the damp paper and pencil are returned to their original places does Shelby admit, "I haven't heard anything about the zoo. Do you want me to spread the word about that, too?"
The surprise on August's face is almost comically obvious as his brow rockets up. "The tiger thing?" he prompts. "You haven't heard about the tiger and the angry spirits?"
"Oh," the girl says, lifting her eyes to the heavens and tipping her chin likewise. "Yes, that. I'm sorry, I thought you were... I don't know what I was thinking of." She adds a rueful smile to her pretty apology. "The last I heard about the zoo was when Zosia asked the rats to help do some scouting. I was about to ask her if she wanted to go back over when Tristan had that accident."
August grunts and there's a slight wince when the word 'accident' is uttered. Then, he cants his head. "I hadn't heard she was getting rats to help. But yeah, I talked to Silvertip-rhya about it and he wanted to help. Gaia willing, it'll get resolved soon now that she's back and there's more people on it."
Shelby says, "Oh yes. Meg, Kevin, Zosia and I crossed to the umbra... oh, it must have been six weeks back now. She asked some rat spirits to help scout the area, but I don't know what's happened since then. If anything. Now that she's back I'll have to follow up on that, too."
August's neutral expression sours again, for some reason. "Right." Abruptly, he stands. "Well, let me know how it all works out on your end. I'll be contacting Zosia and Tim, to start. And I'll text you Kavi's number." And then he's shifting to lupus, evidently to take his leave.
"Yes, August-rhya," Shelby agrees demurely, casting her eyes to the ground again. She may not be looking at him, but somehow she's still aware enough of the other Garou to step out of the way and clear his path.
